Upscale has welcomed Peter Flavel to its Advisory Board, bringing more than three decades of global private banking and wealth management experience to the business. Peter’s appointment brings considerable industry experience to Upscale as we continue to build technology for a wealth management sector undergoing significant change.
Peter brings more than 35 years of experience across international private banking and wealth management, having led some of the industry’s best-known institutions. He is the former CEO of Coutts, previously served as CEO of J.P. Morgan Wealth Management Asia Pacific, and founded Standard Chartered’s global private banking business before serving as its Global CEO. His experience is particularly relevant to Upscale because it extends beyond leading wealth businesses to transforming them. During his time at Coutts, Peter oversaw a significant period of modernisation, with a focus on simplification, innovation and improving the client experience.
That perspective comes at an important time for wealth management. AI, automation and new digital capabilities are creating opportunities to improve advisor productivity and client engagement, but introducing them successfully requires a deep understanding of how established wealth businesses operate. Having worked across Asia and other major international wealth markets, Peter brings both that industry understanding and a valuable perspective on transformation, combining an appreciation of what new technology can enable with first-hand knowledge of the operational realities of highly regulated, relationship-driven organisations.
Bringing industry judgement into technology decisions
As financial institutions adopt new technology, the most difficult questions are rarely about capability alone. The real challenge is understanding how that technology should work in practice: where AI can genuinely remove friction, how digital tools can fit naturally into advisor workflows, and how relationship managers can access better information without introducing additional complexity. There is also an important balance to strike between automation and human judgement, particularly in an industry where trust and personal relationships remain fundamental. Digital engagement should strengthen those relationships rather than attempt to replace them. Answering these questions requires a deep understanding of how wealth businesses operate. Peter’s experience will bring an important industry perspective to those discussions as Upscale continues to develop its platform, strategic partnerships and work with financial institutions.
Supporting the next stage of Upscale
Upscale was founded with a close connection to wealth management, and that domain expertise remains central to how we build the business. We believe the strongest financial technology companies will increasingly combine modern technical capability with a genuine understanding of the industries they serve. Knowing what technology can do is only part of the equation. Creating meaningful value also requires understanding where it fits, how people will use it and what needs to happen operationally for it to become part of the way an institution works. Peter’s experience and industry judgement strengthen that perspective at Upscale, and we are delighted to welcome him to our Advisory Board as the business continues to grow.
Welcome to Upscale, Peter. We’re delighted to have you on the journey with us.
