What Accenture Ventures’ investment means for Upscale

Accenture Ventures’ investment in Upscale validated its approach to personalised, measurable client engagement.

Accenture Ventures' investment in Upscale marked an important milestone in our growth  and a strong validation of the role engagement technology can play as Wealth Managers adapt to changing client expectations, new generations of wealth and an increasingly digital industry. Accenture Ventures' investment in Upscale represented an important milestone for the company.

But its significance goes beyond capital. For us, the investment was also validation of the problem Upscale was created to solve: how wealth and asset management firms turn their expertise into relevant, effective client engagement. Financial institutions have no shortage of valuable knowledge.

The challenge is ensuring that expertise reaches advisors and clients in ways that reflect how people increasingly expect to discover, consume and interact with information. That challenge is becoming more important as the wealth management industry enters a period of significant change. Accenture says Asian Wealth Managers aim to double AUM to nearly US$260tn.

95%

of Asian wealth managers’ targeted AUM growth is expected to be driven by relationship-management employees.

Engagement is becoming a strategic priority

The expectations of wealth management clients are evolving. The Great Wealth Transfer, alongside the rise of a new generation of clients, is accelerating that change. The clients of today and tomorrow will not necessarily engage with financial institutions in the same way previous generations have. They are accustomed to more immediate, personalised and digital interactions across other parts of their lives. Increasingly, they will expect financial institutions to provide similarly relevant experiences. For wealth managers, that makes engagement more than a communications consideration. It is becoming a commercial priority.

Accenture Ventures' investment provided important validation of that opportunity and of Upscale's belief that better digital content generation, distribution and engagement will become increasingly important to how wealth managers build and maintain client relationships.

A global challenge

Although Upscale was founded in Southeast Asia, the engagement challenge we set out to address is not limited to one market.

Wealth management models differ significantly between regions, but many of the underlying challenges are remarkably consistent. Institutions have considerable expertise distributed across investment teams, research functions, product specialists and relationship managers. Turning that expertise into relevant client communication and doing so efficiently and at scale remains difficult across markets.

By the time of the Accenture Ventures investment, Upscale had already expanded beyond Southeast Asia into markets including the Middle East and Europe. During the investment process, the team also explored use cases across other major global wealth-management regions and found the underlying need was consistent.

The investment therefore provided an opportunity to accelerate Upscale's international expansion and take its engagement technology into more of the world's major wealth-management markets.

More than an investment

The relationship with Accenture also created opportunities beyond funding. As part of the investment, Upscale joined Accenture Ventures' Project Spotlight, an accelerator for emerging data and AI companies.

Through Project Spotlight, Upscale gained greater access to Accenture's domain expertise and enterprise ecosystem, bringing together Upscale's specialist understanding of wealth-management engagement with Accenture's experience working with large organisations. That combination is particularly relevant in financial services.

Technology may be evolving rapidly, but adoption within wealth management requires a deep understanding of existing workflows, governance requirements and client relationships. New capabilities need to solve genuine problems and create tangible value if they are going to become part of everyday business.

Combining AI with industry expertise

Generative AI adds another dimension to that opportunity. The value of AI in wealth management is not simply the ability to create more content. Financial institutions already produce enormous amounts of information. The bigger opportunity is using technology to make that expertise more relevant, personalised and actionable.

By combining Accenture's generative AI expertise, industry experience and data capabilities with Upscale's engagement technology and wealth-management specialisation, the partnership creates opportunities to develop more sophisticated ways for firms to communicate with clients and support relationship teams. For Upscale, that means continuing to develop technology around a clear outcome: helping financial institutions create more relevant communications and more meaningful client experiences.

Technology that delivers tangible value

Building technology for wealth management comes with a particular set of challenges. Sales cycles can be long, institutions operate within complex technology environments, and regulation and governance place additional demands on how new solutions are introduced.

Adopting a new platform also requires trust, something that takes time to establish. That makes solving genuine business problems especially important. New technology needs to demonstrate tangible value, whether by improving existing workflows, increasing productivity or creating better ways for firms to engage with their clients. Innovation alone is rarely enough.

Technology that grows with the organisation.

Once technology becomes embedded within an organisation, however, those relationships can become long term. This has shaped Upscale’s approach from the beginning: combining proven technology with the flexibility to adapt to different institutions, workflows and stages of transformation.

Helping wealth managers stay relevant

The longer-term opportunity is closely tied to the direction wealth management is heading. As the industry continues to grow and a new generation of wealth becomes increasingly influential, both established institutions and new entrants will need to evolve how they build and maintain client relationships.

Remaining relevant will require firms to rethink how expertise moves through their organisations, how easily advisors can access and act on it, and how clients ultimately experience that expertise. This is the opportunity Upscale is building towards: helping financial institutions modernise engagement as the expectations of the clients they serve continue to change.

Our ambition is to become a meaningful change agent for wealth and asset management: providing practical technology that institutions can adopt and adapt as audience expectations continue to evolve. That was part of the original vision articulated around the Accenture investment, and it remains highly relevant to where Upscale is heading today. Accenture Ventures' investment gave us greater reach, expertise and resources to pursue that ambition, helping us scale our AI capabilities, continue developing the platform and bring our technology to more financial institutions globally.
